Being a web model helped me develop into who I am today. And I can tell you right now, whoever you are, the best project you’ll ever work on is YOU!
I went from the girl who was afraid of being all alone to the woman who revels in it, because it is her time to grow. I went from feeling insecure about the way I looked and felt and thought to totally owning myself as I am. And most important of all, I got to know the real me.
And I love my life now.
So for those of you who are thinking about giving it a chance, here are the 3 key ways that being a model helped me grow:
It opened me up to diversity
I was born and raised in the same town and never having any encouragement to really seek anything else outside of it. So I remember how curious and totally mesmerized I was at first, when every new person that I came in contact with, was from a totally different part of the world then the previous or the next one. Such a richness of cultures, so many languages, so many personalities! And I had a front row seat to intimately connect and interact with it all.
I think this is the best thing about online interactions. Because for people like me who are introverts, face to face interaction can be quite traumatic. However, online, on live-cam websites, you chose when an interaction starts and when it ends. You say whom you want to talk to or not and for how long. Simply put, you have complete control.
It helped me realize that all people have secrets
It doesn’t sound like much, but there is a kind of freedom in realizing all people have secrets. You feel less bad about maybe having some yourself. Furthermore, you feel like you aren’t really alone and that you belong.
Being a model gave me the resources to follow my dreams
When I first started being a web model I would think of it as something temporary. A means to an end. It would help me pay my way through school after which I would get a ‘real job’. It’s funny that after finishing my studies I very quickly realized that there was no job out there that would compare. No job would earn me half what I was making as a model in double the time. And no job would allow me the same freedom and control as being a model.
At first I was very disappointed. It took me a while to figure out what to do next. But then I got to thinking. The same way modeling got me through school, maybe now it could get me closer to what I really wanted in life. I wanted to travel, meet new people, experience other cultures, see that world, take pictures and write about everything.
So I left my disappointment behind and booked an entire year of travel. And I funded it all by being a model in between my travels.
